Senior Umno leader Razlan Rafii expects DAP delegates at the party’s annual congress tomorrow to vote for it to remain in the federal government.
The Umno supreme council member said DAP was too dependent on Pakatan Harapan to seriously consider leaving the coalition.
Instead, Razlan claimed, the motion on whether DAP should remain in Putrajaya was merely an attempt to pressure Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and push the government to meet its demands.
“They (DAP) would not exit the government, because they are dependent on Harapan.
“If they quit, it would make the government unstable, because they have five ministers and seven deputy ministers.
“The rakyat will see that it is no longer logical for this government to be in power if such a big block of 40 representatives (DAP MPs) no longer believe in government policies.
“Because exiting the government means they no longer believe in government policies, which is another way of saying they lose confidence in Anwar.
“I think that is the most difficult thing for them to do,” said Razlan, who is political secretary to Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Razlan spoke to Malaysiakini in an exclusive interview in Putrajaya yesterday.
Over 4,200 DAP delegates to the party convention in Putrajaya tomorrow will decide at the party’s congress tomorrow whether DAP should remain in or withdraw from the federal government for the rest of the current parliamentary term.
On Monday, party national organising secretary Khoo Poay Tiong said the motion would be tabled by DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke on behalf of the party’s central executive committee and would be open for debate.
This will be followed by a secret ballot, with each delegate given a ballot paper to cast their vote.
Wrong message
Razlan said DAP also realised that quitting the government now would send the wrong message to the people.
Such a move could also trigger a snap general election, he added.
“If they leave (the government), they would send the wrong message, as the people would see it as them having lost confidence in the government.
“Of course, a general election will be held in the near future. In everyone’s view, this would look like another major party supporting the government leaving,” he said.
Razlan said tomorrow’s congress was merely an avenue for DAP to hear the views of its members following several defeats in recent elections.
“In my view, this is an undisciplined move, merely to pressure the prime minister. Ever since its defeat in the Sabah state election, they have been threatening the prime minister to implement the reform agenda,” Razlan said. - Mkini
