MACC mulls foreign help with Tabung Haji probe; police nab 3 including cop over drugs

 

Tabung Haji RCI 

• The MACC is considering engaging foreign forensic experts to assist its investigation into findings in the royal commission of inquiry report on Tabung Haji.

  MACC chief commissioner Abd Halim Aman said the probe covers investment decisions, agreements, contracts, meeting minutes, and other documents that require detailed forensic scrutiny.

  

  “The documents involved in this investigation are very extensive and need to be studied and scrutinised. This effort requires specific examination and expertise.

  “Discussions on appointing forensic experts are also subject to the costs involved. These forensic experts will also work together with the specialist officers we have at MACC,” he said in Kota Kinabalu, Bernama reported.

  Halim also said MACC has so far opened 14 investigation papers and searched 28 premises, recorded 115 witness statements, arrested seven suspects, and remanded five.

Drug arrests

• Police arrested three people, including a constable, after drugs were found in the lock-up at the Lumut police station during an inspection on Tuesday.

  Perak police chief Alwi Zainal Abidin said methamphetamine, heroin, and cannabis, estimated to be worth RM18,534, were found with two detainees in their 40s at about 8.30am. All three have been remanded for seven days.

  

  “Police found 16 plastic packets containing substances suspected to be methamphetamine weighing an estimated 109.54g, as well as 16 plastic packets containing substances suspected to be heroin weighing an estimated 110.37g.

  “Police also found 23 plastic packets containing dried leaves suspected to be cannabis weighing an estimated 142.31g,” he said, Bernama reported.

  Following the discovery, police arrested a constable assigned to the police station. Two of the three suspects tested positive for methamphetamine, while the constable tested negative and had no prior record.

Animal Rights 

• Lawyers for Animal Rights (LAR) has urged the Seremban City Council to immediately withdraw a scheme offering RM50 for every adult stray dog and RM25 for every puppy surrendered by members of the public.

  LAR described the initiative as a “cash-for-capture” scheme, arguing that animal capture is a high-risk activity that should be handled by trained personnel.

  “This is a cash-for-capture scheme, which encourages members of the public to catch dogs themselves, despite DVS guidance recognising animal capture as a high-risk activity requiring trained personnel,” said lawyers Rajesh Nagarajan and Sachpreetraj Singh for LAR, in a statement.

  

  The duo also raised concerns that the scheme could result in owned dogs being wrongly surrendered for cash.

  They further urged the Negeri Sembilan Veterinary Services Department and the Housing and Local Government Ministry to investigate the council and determine who approved the scheme. - Mkini
