KUALA KANGSAR: A tour boat driver made a gruesome discovery today after spotting a decomposing body stuffed inside a wrapped suitcase in the shallow waters of Sungai Perak near the Sultan Abdul Jalil Shah Bridge (Sayong Bridge).
He noticed that a drop in the water level had left the plastic-wrapped suitcase stranded in the middle of the riverbed.
Perak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) assistant director of operations Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad said five firefighters from the Kuala Kangsar station were dispatched to the scene after receiving an alert from police at 4.24pm.
"Police informed the operation commander that a body had been found in the middle of the river, and firefighters stood by while the police forensic team conducted its initial investigation," he said in a statement.
The police forensic unit arrived at the scene at 6.40pm, as curious onlookers gathered along the riverbank to watch the retrieval operation.
The victim is believed to be an unidentified woman who had been dead for several days, based on the advanced state of decomposition.
The tour boat operator had reportedly noticed the suitcase trapped in the river over the past few days, but it was only discovered today that parts of a body were protruding from it, accompanied by a strong, foul odour.
The boat regularly operates 20-minute sightseeing trips along Sungai Perak in the Kuala Kangsar area. - NST
