Anwar received a warm welcome at Markaz in Karanthur, Kozhikode, where he also met prominent Sunni Muslim cleric Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliyar.
During a private meeting with Kanthapuram, Anwar discussed educational exchanges between Markaz and Malaysian higher education institutions, potential cooperation in education, culture, knowledge and the welfare of the Indian community in Malaysia, according to ANI News.
Following the meeting, Anwar attended a dinner hosted by the Grand Mufti, which brought together prominent figures from the religious, political, social, cultural and business sectors.
The prime minister later visited the Madavoor C.M. Valiyullah Dargah, an important pilgrimage site in South India.
Anwar arrived in Kozhikode after participating in the BRICS Leaders' Summit in New Delhi, hosted by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as part of his working visit to India.
Keralam Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan warmly welcomed Anwar upon his arrival at Karipur Airport in Kozhikode.
Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, is accompanied on the working visit by Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani and Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan.
Before arriving in Keralam, Anwar said on social media that he expected the visit to drive progress in trade, tourism, investment, economic cooperation, education and connectivity between Malaysia and India.
Anwar's maiden visit to Keralam as prime minister is seen as an important step in strengthening Malaysia-India relations, particularly with the southern Indian states, which have strong economic, tourism and people-to-people links with Malaysia.
The Consul General of Malaysia to South India, K. Saravana Kumar, told reporters on Sunday that Kerala's expertise in Ayurveda, coupled with its growing integration of traditional medicine with modern healthcare, could offer opportunities for Malaysia to develop its wellness tourism sector.
Tourism also offers significant scope for deeper cooperation, he said, given the strong flow of visitors between Malaysia and southern India, particularly Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
Saravana said the prime minister's visit was expected to inject fresh momentum into Malaysia's engagement with southern India while opening opportunities to develop cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
On Monday, Anwar is scheduled to attend a private programme at Tulah Clinical Wellness, where he will stay for one night.
He will later meet Satheesan and Keralam Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at Tulah Clinical Wellness to discuss bilateral cooperation in key sectors, including trade and investment, tourism, healthcare and education.
Anwar is also scheduled to hold one-on-one business engagements and meetings with prominent Indian industry players and corporate figures, with the discussions expected to identify new opportunities for trade, investment and commercial cooperation.
After completing his Keralam visit, Anwar is scheduled to depart for the Maldives on Sept 14.
The working visit is expected to give further impetus to the Malaysia-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership while opening opportunities to expand high-impact cooperation, particularly in trade and investment, digital technology and education. - NST
