Bomb disposal squad detonates object after radiation scare

 Police say a box found oustide a Sri Petaling store recorded high radiation readings, but there were no traces of radiation after it was disposed of.

Police deployed a bomb disposal unit to the scene in Sri Petaling after a woman alerted them to the suspicious box, which reportedly had the word ‘bomb’ written on it.

A bomb disposal unit was deployed after a suspicious plastic box which recorded high radiation readings was found in front of a shoplot at Sri Petaling in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon.

A woman called the police just before 1pm over the suspicious box, said city police chief Fadil Marsus. An initial investigation found that it contained radioactive material based on the high radiation readings.

Fadil said personnel from the Kuala Lumpur police bomb disposal unit, Bukit Aman’s chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive weapons unit, and the Malaysian Nuclear Agency were at the scene.

“The bomb disposal unit disposed of the object, which included several smaller boxes that contained what appeared to be Lego blocks.

“Further checks by the atomic energy department confirmed that there were no radioactive readings at the scene (after the object was disposed of),” he said in a statement.

The case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation.

Earlier, Oriental Daily reported that a worker discovered the box in a corner outside a store, which had the word “bomb” written on it. - FMT
