DAP Youth urges AG to review Zahid’s Yayasan Akalbudi case

 Youth wing questions the DNAA granted to the Umno president in 2023, and the NFA in January this year, following the deterioration of ties between BN and PH.

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was granted a DNAA for his 47 charges in 2023 to allow for further investigations, before the case was classified as NFA in January.

DAP Youth has urged the attorney-general (AG) to review Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s Yayasan Akalbudi case, in which he was granted a conditional discharge before the case was classified as requiring no further action (NFA).

The youth wing said the government’s anti-corruption agenda should not exempt politicians within its own ranks, and that the same standards should apply across the board.

“In view of growing concerns surrounding the controversial case, the AG has to demonstrate his unwavering professionalism in exercising his prosecutorial power to fully address and allay public concerns over the independence of the prosecution system.

“DAP Youth calls on the AG to demonstrate his commitment to safeguarding the administration of justice by reviewing the evidence and charges in the Yayasan Akalbudi case,” it said in a statement.

Zahid, the deputy prime minister, was granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) for his 47 charges of corruption, money laundering and criminal breach of trust in his Yayasan Akalbudi case in 2023.

The prosecution said the DNAA was to allow the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to conduct further investigations.

At the time the DNAA was granted, the case had already reached the defence stage, with Zahid and 14 other defence witnesses having testified.

The case was classified as NFA in January this year.

DAP Youth’s call comes amid deteriorating ties between Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional (BN), which Zahid leads.

BN and Perikatan Nasional formed an electoral alliance for the Negeri Sembilan election, and won a two-thirds majority in the state legislature. - FMT
