KUALA LUMPUR:
Federal territories minister Hannah Yeoh has confirmed that the Federal Territories Pardons Board (FTPB) will meet tomorrow morning.

However, Yeoh, who sits on the board, declined to elaborate.

“Yes, I can confirm that tomorrow at 8.30am, there will be a pardons board meeting.

“We have been called, and that is all I can comment on for now,” she told reporters after an event today.

Yesterday, sources familiar with the matter told FMT that former prime minister Najib Razak’s application is expected to be among the matters raised at the board’s meeting this week.

However, it is unclear whether the meeting will result in a decision or whether the board will only discuss the matter.

A separate source also said Najib might be allowed to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest, although it remains unclear whether the option will be considered at the meeting.

Najib, 72, was convicted six years ago of misappropriating RM42 million in SRC International funds. He was fined RM210 million and handed a 12-year jail term which he has been serving at Kajang prison since August 2022.

The FTPB later halved his prison term to six years and reduced the fine to RM50 million.

On Dec 22 last year, High Court judge Alice Loke dismissed Najib’s application to serve the remainder of his reduced six-year jail term in the SRC International case under house arrest.

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said they were leaving it to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to decide on Najib’s fate.

“But we are hoping for the best,” he told reporters when met at the party’s general assembly. - FMT
