Themed 'Malaysia Madani: Kesejahteraan Dinikmati', the event was broadcast across various television and digital platforms, allowing Malaysians to share in the festivities.
Sarawak Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar was the guest of honour at the national-level celebration.
The event opened with a 'Segulai Sejalai' (Iban phrase meaning moving in step together) welcome performance, alongside the national and Sarawak state anthems, Negaraku and Ibu Pertiwiku, respectively.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim then delivered his address, followed by the symbolic digital signing of the Malaysia Day 2026 Commemorative Book together with Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, a gesture demonstrating their resolve to strengthen unity.
The highlight of the celebration came with the cutting of pulut kuning (yellow glutinous rice) as a symbolic launch of this year's Malaysia Day.
This was followed by the entry parade of the Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang convoy and the recitation of the Rukun Negara led by Sarawak boxer Muhammad Asyraf Abdullah, 26, better known as Kilat Boy.
Guests were also treated to the musical theatre performances 'Malaysia Madani, Kesejahteraan Dinikmati' and 'Serumpun Madani Tiga Wilayah', which celebrated the spirit of patriotism and unity between Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak.
The closing performance by Faizal Tahir with the song 'Aku Berjanji' drew thunderous applause from the audience before the celebration came to a close with a fireworks display over the Kuching Waterfront. - NST
