Operations at Perak quarry temporarily halted after fatal accident

Operations at a quarry at Keramat Pulai in Simpang Pulai, Perak, have been temporarily halted after a lorry driver was killed on Monday when a boulder fell on his vehicle.

Executive councillor A Sivanesan said the state occupational safety and health department (DOSH) had issued a prohibition notice following the incident, which would remain in effect until it received an engineer’s report and determined the next course of action.

In the 4.40pm incident, the lorry driver was waiting to enter the quarry when a boulder fell from the hillside, crushing the front of the vehicle.

The driver was trapped in the lorry’s cabin, Kosmo quoted him as saying during a visit to the site today.

Sivanesan said the department was investigating the incident under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 and would take legal action against the employer if they had breached any law.

He said blasting work had been carried out at the quarry earlier on Monday, but no movement was detected until the boulder fell about three hours later.

“Police will also investigate to determine the cause of the incident,” he said. - FMT
