Taiping eatery owner fined RM18,000 over halal cert offence

A restaurant owner was fined RM18,000 by the Taiping sessions court today after pleading guilty to displaying the words “Allah” and “Muhammad” on the premises despite not possessing valid halal certification.

Perak domestic trade and cost of living ministry (KPDN) director Kamalludin Ismail said an enforcement team from the Taiping KPDN branch conducted an inspection at the restaurant on Jalan Kamunting, Taiping, on Jan 1, Bernama reported.

Analysis by the chemistry department found porcine DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) in two bottles of soy sauce seized from the premises, he said in a statement tonight.

He said the premises displayed decorations bearing the words “Allah” and “Muhammad”, which are associated with Islam.

Checks with the Perak Islamic religious affairs department confirmed that the restaurant did not possess a valid halal certificate.

Kamalludin said the prosecution today was conducted by prosecuting officer Nizam Yunan.

He said the accused, Seah Thien Lim, 43, pleaded guilty to the charge, which was framed under Order 4(1) of the Trade Descriptions (Definition of Halal) Order 2011. - FMT
