KOTA KINABALU: Traps have been set up to nab a crocodile recently spotted swimming close to snorkelers at Sapi Island here, says Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin.
Though the reptile has yet to reappear, he said the traps placed at identified high-risk areas were also being monitored to prevent other marine species, especially turtles, from nearing tourist spots.
He added that alerts are being continuously sent out via signboards and guides about the presence of a crocodile in the area for the safety of visitors to the island and the surrounding areas within the popular Tunku Abdul Rahman Park.
He said rules such as a prior sweep done by tour agents and guides before any scuba diving, snorkelling or sea walking activities have been put in place, and no one is allowed to swim or snorkel alone.
“Sea activities must be done in groups after the area has been checked for the reptile,” said Jafry in a statement on Thursday (Oct 8).
He urged lifeguards to be extra vigilant and to remind visitors of the crocodile’s presence in the area.
More patrols are being conducted by Sabah Parks and Sabah Wildlife Department (SWD) personnel as well, he said, adding there have been no new reports of the crocodile’s sighting.
“Please listen to the instructions and cooperate with Sabah Parks and ground staff if there is any sighting of the reptile,” Jafry advised.
He said updates on the situation will be given upon requirement.
It was reported that snorkelers had noticed the reptile swimming close by on Oct 5, prompting all sea activities to be stopped at that time. - Star
