Bersatu to contest under own logo in Melaka, open to pacts

The party says it wants to boost the chances of a stable, moderate and progressive state government being formed after the polls.

PETALING JAYA:
Bersatu has confirmed that it will take part in the upcoming Melaka state election, with the Perikatan Nasional component to contest under its own logo amid its ongoing tiff with PAS, which chairs the coalition.

Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali also said the party is ready to hold talks to form electoral pacts with others, having initially said it will not work with other parties in the polls.

“The decision to form electoral pacts in the Melaka polls is aimed at boosting the potential of a stable, moderate and progressive state government being formed.

“Bersatu appeals to the people of Melaka to give Bersatu’s candidates the opportunity to represent them in the legislature and bring meaningful change,” he said in a statement.

Azmin said Bersatu will finalise the seats it intends to contest soon, adding that this followed a political bureau meeting chaired by party president Muhyiddin Yassin this evening.

Bersatu has fallen out of favour in PN after PAS ended their political cooperation in June.

PAS led PN into forming an alliance with Barisan Nasional in the Aug 1 Negeri Sembilan election, which resulted in the pact securing a two-thirds majority.

Bersatu went solo and failed to win a single seat, with all its 24 candidates suffering heavy defeats.

It has since been linked to speculation of a pact with Pakatan Harapan, especially following a dinner involving leaders of their Melaka chapters last month.

Bersatu is a former PH component and played a key role in the collapse of the PH-led federal government in February 2020 as Muhyiddin took over as prime minister. - FMT
