PETALING JAYA:
The domestic trade and cost of living ministry has launched a fund to help local companies cover the cost of professional intellectual property (IP) valuation services, with a pilot allocation of RM1 million.

Its minister, Armizan Mohd Ali, said the fund was one of two initiatives launched today by his ministry through the Malaysian Intellectual Property Corporation (MyIPO).

“This is particularly important for technology-based startups and small and medium-sized enterprises with valuable IP assets that face difficulties obtaining financing because they lack traditional physical collateral,” he said in a statement.

The second initiative is Malaysia’s first IP valuation module, which Armizan said would serve as a basis for more uniform valuation standards and support efforts to train qualified and regulated local IP valuation experts.

“The two initiatives will complement each other in developing a more structured IP-backed financing ecosystem.

“The fund will help companies obtain valuation services, while the module will strengthen capacity, expertise and standards in carrying out the valuation process,” he said.

The two initiatives were launched in conjunction with the National Intellectual Property Commercialisation Conference and Exhibition (IP Confex) 2026 at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur.

Held yesterday and today, IP Confex 2026 brought together more than 500 participants, connecting industry players, financial institutions, researchers, innovators, and government agencies.

Armizan said the event also saw the exchange of memoranda of understanding between MyIPO and six organisations – the World Intellectual Property Organisation, Multimedia University, Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation, National Entrepreneurship Institute, Perbadanan Nasional Bhd, and the Malaysia Motorcycle and Scooter Assemblers and Distributors Association.

He said the strategic collaborations would strengthen MyIPO’s network of international and local organisations, educational institutions, trade and entrepreneurship development agencies, as well as industry players.

“The collaborations will also support the sharing of expertise, capacity-building and efforts to expand the commercialisation of local intellectual property.

“The launch of the two new initiatives and the establishment of strategic collaborations reflect the ministry’s continued commitment, through MyIPO, to making intellectual property a driver of commercialisation, financing and economic growth,” he said. - FMT
