PETALING JAYA:
Law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said has welcomed the 2027 budget’s initiatives towards continuing to execute legal and institutional reforms.

Azalina acknowledged that the two-term limit for the prime minister’s post has yet to receive two-thirds support in Parliament, while the separation of the attorney-general and public prosecutor’s roles is still under study.

Nonetheless, she reiterated that the Madani administration was committed to ensuring these key reforms are achieved, while respecting the parliamentary process.

“The most meaningful reform is the government’s bravery to limit its own powers,” she said in a statement in response to the tabling of the budget today.

Azalina also thanked Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for committing to studying the establishment of a law reform commission to identify outdated laws and gaps in legislation.

“This commitment continues the Madani government’s record in reforms, which has included returning Parliament’s autonomy after three decades, strengthening the roles of parliamentary committees, and law reforms to bolster human rights and access to justice,” she said.

She also welcomed the revised bankruptcy threshold from RM100,000 to RM150,000, and the expansion of the Second Chance Policy to primary caregivers of disabled family members, chronic illness patients, senior citizens, gig workers and those with irregular incomes.

She pointed out that the Second Chance Policy had successfully brought more than 250,000 Malaysians out of bankruptcy since 2023.

“The 2027 Madani budget proves that reforms do not only transform laws and institutions but bring real change to the people and the future of the country,” she said. - FMT
