As the Formula One Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix returned to the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) after a nine-year hiatus, traffic restrictions and shuttle transport bottlenecks left thousands of spectators stranded on Friday and Saturday.
Frustrated fans quickly took to social media, with widely shared posts on X joking that race organisers had accidentally scheduled a biathlon — the F1 and a "brisk walk".
Where others saw misery, enterprising local motorcyclists saw an opening.
By Saturday afternoon, an informal two-wheel shuttle service, dubbed the "Sepang Gojek" by netizens, had sprung up on social media.
Local kapcai riders marketed themselves as "express alternatives" to beating the gridlock between circuit drop-off points, satellite car parks and transit hubs.
Fares ranged from RM10 to RM100 depending on the distance and demand.
"Shuttle bus full? Lazy to wait forever?" posted one rider, on Threads.
"I'm launching F1 Moto Ride for anyone who wants a quick trip back to their parking spot after the event." He advertised rides from the circuit perimeter for RM50.
Another rider, offered rides for stranded female fans between the petrol station opposite the circuit and nearby transit points for RM20.
While some charged up to RM100 for high-demand trips to airport terminals, others simply offered free lifts to tired racegoers trudging along the highway shoulders.
However, by Sunday afternoon, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) had launched an enforcement operation targeting unauthorised commercial passenger operations around the circuit and airport access roads. - NST
