PETALING JAYA:
Former Pengkalan Batu assemblyman Norhizam Hassan Baktee, popularly known as “YB Hulk”, says he is ready to contest in the upcoming Melaka election.

Norhizam, who is now Hang Tuah Jaya Bersatu deputy chief, said he understood that his name had been included in the list of potential candidates for the Melaka polls, although the seat he would contest had yet to be determined.

“Yes, I want to contest, but I don’t know which seat I will be fielded in yet. Other parties have also approached me, but nothing has been confirmed.

“I don’t mind contesting any seat. What matters is that I get to contest and my name is on the list. Wherever you put someone who can do the job, they will make it work,” Sinar Harian reported him saying.

Norhizam said he still wanted to serve in Pengkalan Batu, but several factors needed consideration, including competing claims for the seat.

Norhizam was a member of DAP when elected to the Pengkalan Batu seat in the 2018 state election. He left the party in 2020, declaring himself an independent assemblyman supporting the Umno-led state government.

He was among four assemblymen who withdrew support for then chief minister Sulaiman Ali, which led to a fresh election being called in 2021.

He sought to defend the Pengkalan Batu seat as an independent that year but lost to Barisan Nasional’s Kalsom Noordin by a narrow 131-vote majority in a five-cornered fight.

Norhizam previously courted controversy for arguing with villagers over a road closure in Bukit Beruang, prompting then Melaka chief minister Adly Zahari to apologise on his behalf.

He also made headlines in 2020 after a heated exchange in the Melaka state assembly saw him repeatedly referring to former party colleague and Kota Laksamana assemblyman Low Chee Leong as “babi”. - FMT
