MIC elections kick off as 96 vie for top posts

MIC 7
MIC is holding its party elections in Malacca today, its first since 2009, and the number of candidates contesting is a sign of a mood of change as the vice president's post sees an eight-cornered fight.

The vice president is the highest post open after both G Palanivel and  S Subramaniam retained their positions as president and deputy president uncontested.

The party is also witnessing a record 88 candidates vying for 23 central working committee seats available, and this has caused the election venue today to be flooded with campaign materials from nearly 100 candidates.

The election process has begun, but will be closely scrutinised by 1,452 delegates who are expected to decide on a terse and tricky battle.

Deputy Youth and Sports Minister M Saravanan and Perak state speaker S Devamany are the incumbent vice presidents and are largely expected to retain their seats, leaving the third VP seat up for grabs.

The other notable candidates include former deputy minister S Sothinathan, and former MIC Youth Chief T Mohan who is attempting to have a stab at national leadership.

Former Kota Raja MP A Vigneswaran, and party treasurer general Jaspal Singh are also contesting, guaranteeing a rough road for Devamany and Saravanan to keep their posts.

These elections and the general assembly tomorrow will be a litmus test on how the delegates are reacting to MIC's poor performance in the last elections, and how it is, or isn't, standing up for Indian issues given Persatuan Hindraf's recognition by the government.
