Mais claims Selangor gov't has no power over Jais

The Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) has said that the Selangor government has no authority over the Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (Jais) and shot down the state government's proposal to amend the body's standard operating procedure (SOP).

Mais chairperson Mohamad Adzib Mohd Isa said Jais came under his council, which is only answerable to the Selangor sultan.

"Jais is under Mais, which is also headed by the Selangor Sultan as the state Islamic chief. The state government has no say over Jais's enforcement activities," he was quoted as saying by Malay Mail Online.

The Selangor government had proposed to amend Jais' SOP after it raided the Bible Society of Malaysia and confiscated over 300 Malay-language bibles containing the word 'Allah', triggering tensions between the Christian and Muslim communities.

However, Selangor exco in charge of Islamic affairs Sallehen Mukhyi insisted that Mais is an agency under the state government.

"Mais is the policy-making body for Jais, while at the same time Jais is an agency under the state government," he was quoted as saying in the same report.
