Saifuddin Abdullah urges EC's resignation

Former deputy higher education minister Saifuddin Abdullah has urged the Election Commission members to resign as they have failed to inspire confidence before and after the 13th general election.

This, he said, was essential especially at a time when the re-delineation process will be conducted.

"On the re-delineation of constituencies, I think we need a new EC chairperson who is passionate, independent and does not speak on behalf of BN," he told a forum after a book launch in Kuala Lumpur last night.

The book is entitled 'Electoral Dynamics in Malaysia' by political science professor Meredith L Weiss (left).

Saifuddin, who is the Global Movement of Moderates (GMM) Foundation chief executive officer, said this will make it easier for bi-partisan negotiations on the re-delineation process.

"In the last general election, the people again rejected BN's two-thirds majority, the ruling coalition and opposition must now learn to work bipartisanly," he said.

Saifuddin is echoing electoral reform group Bersih, which hasrepeatedly urged a new EC line-up.

Bersih had accused the existing EC of being biased towards the ruling coalition.
