Chicken ceiling price up by 50 sen to RM9.40 per kg

Chicken prices will continue to be subsidised, the government said today, with the new ceiling price for Peninsular Malaysia now set at RM9.40 per kg - an increase of RM0.50.

In a statement, Agriculture and Food Industries Minister Ronald Kiandee said the cabinet also decided in its meeting to set the ceiling price of chicken eggs at RM0.45 per piece for Grade A eggs, RM0.43 for Grade B, and RM0.41 for Grade C - an increase of RM0.02.

The new ceiling prices are effective this July 1.

“The decision was made in consideration and coordinated with the Keluarga Malaysia Aid (Bantuan Keluarga Malaysia, or BKM), which was announced by Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob recently, a cash assistance initiative that provides up to RM500 to the B40 group and a part of the M40 group,” Ronald said.

According to the minister, the government has approved for some 8.6 million BKM recipients with households to receive a total of RM2,600 each this year.

“With the subsidies, the government is allocating another RM369.5 million, increasing the total amount of subsidies to RM1.1 billion since February 5, 2022.

“The issue of price hikes is not occurring only in Malaysia but is a global phenomenon due to disruptions to the food supply chain caused by geopolitical conflicts and climate change.

“However, the government will try its best to set price control mechanisms to ensure Malaysian families would not be burdened by the challenging cost of living.” - Mkini
