'Don't be afraid of research,' Yeoh says amid backlash on KL mayor polls study

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh has penned a strong backing for "research" amid much backlash over a study on the prospect of holding a mayoral election in Kuala Lumpur.

Taking to Facebook, Yeoh noted that to reach detailed and convincing decisions, accurate data and facts are needed.

In the post, which she described as a reflection in conjunction with Federal Territories Day today, the DAP lawmaker emphasised that one should "never be afraid of research".

"Comparing the 'pros and cons' enables us to make careful decisions, (thus) saving time and energy from doing work that brings no benefit (while) avoiding mistakes.

"Research makes us wiser. Research is also a process of arriving at better decisions," she added.

Use wisdom to lead

Reminiscing on her learning process to obtain her law degree, the minister also highlighted that wisdom is an important element for a leader tasked with the responsibility of leading the rakyat.

Yesterday, China Press reported that Yeoh’s office was studying the mayoral election, with the minister saying it was more practical than electing local councillors for Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).

Right-wing Malay-based political parties have long opposed the local council election, claiming it would erode Malay power in urban areas where non-Malays are the majority.

Following Yeoh's remarks, Umno had pushed back against the move to conduct a feasibility study for such elections, with the party's leaders playing on sentiments aimed at riling up Malays, and not logical arguments that challenge the merits of such polls.

In contrast, Selangor PAS Youth gave a more measured response to the proposal, saying it needed a rational discussion. - Mkini
