Lim on why DAP keeps 'sack the bugger' MP

The DAP appears to be unfazed over the outspokenness of Jelutong MP Jeff Ooi who had recently called for Selangor Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim to be sacked over the water woes in the state.

The party’s secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said he had been asked why he continues to keep Ooi close to him and delegate important tasks of the state to him despite his repeated notorious outbursts and bluntness.

“I say I rely on Ooi the way I rely on all my other leaders because I see his strength and not his weaknesses,” Lim said last night at the party’s Impian Malaysia dinner in Penang to raise funds for small infrastructure projects in the interiors of Sabah and Sarawak.

“He speaks boldly and bluntly, sometimes we also get a scolding from him but we look at his other strengths.

"We are suppose to work as a team and when we obtain success, it does not belong to one person but to the whole team,” Lim told a crowd of 3,000 people who attended the dinner in Bayan Baru.

The Penang Chief Minister was referring to Ooi, who blamed Khalid for Selangor’s water crisis, saying such a situation never arose when BN administered the state.

Last year, Ooi was forced to apologise at DAP’s state convention, when the late Karpal Singh, then the party’s national chairman, ticked him off for calling a low-ranking civil servant of the Penang Municipal Councillor “kucing kurap”, as his statement irked many quarters.

This time, Ooi trained his guns on Khalid, saying he has “overstayed our welcome. Sack that bugger”.

“A Pakatan (Rakyat) failure is a Pakatan failure,” Ooi had said, expressing his utter frustration at the water rationing in a Facebookposting on Apr 23.

Ooi said he was a ratepayer in Selangor as he owned a house in Subang Jaya, and the area is constantly subjected to water supply cuts.

“I only come home once in a fortnight, even just to sleep. And it's water-cut whenever I come back lately. Practically mandi kerbau (haphazardly shower) every time!” he added.

Khalid had retorted that Ooi had no power to demand for his sacking, insisting that the latter's outburst was an issue of “maturity and capability of a leader”.

Penang's success people's talent

Earlier before replying on Ooi's comments, Lim talked about team spirit, Lim went on to say that he is often asked why Penang fared better than other states, and whether it was because the DAP, which leads the state government, had better leaders.

He dismissed the notion, saying he does not believe in comparing one leader to another but explained the reason behind Penang’s success compared to other states.

“The principle reason for our ability is because we believe in the institution - we must believe in human talent, that the people of Penang are talented,” he said.

“Like in football, one Maradona cannot beat 11 players. We must have a team spirit. We cannot depend on one person but on our team members,” he added.

“Of course, leaders can provide the direction and the vision but it is the team who will work together to bring about success in the things we do,” he stressed.

“That is why in Penang, we do not look at the weaknesses of a leader, we look at the strengths of all the leaders,” he quipped, before going on to explain his stand on Ooi’s attitude.
