DAP’s Sarawak strongman Wong Ho Leng in COMA for brain tumour
KUALA LUMPUR - DAP’s Wong Ho Leng, Sarawak assemblyman for Bukit Assek is in a coma at Sibu’s Rejang Medical Centre, The Star reported his wife Irene Chang as saying today.
Chang broke the news and apologised to her husband’s constituents for his inability to serve them, the paper reported on its website.
She also thanked Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem and state party leader Chong Chieng Jen for assisting her husband in paying medical bills, it said.
“I would like to record my appreciation to Sarawak DAP chairman, Chong Chieng Jen for helping to apply for financial aid from the state government, and to the state government, especially to the Chief Minister for agreeing to help,” she was quoted saying by in a press conference in Sibu.
Last January, Wong said he was undergoing treatment for brain tumour, which neurosurgeons in Australia found in December 2012.
The oncologists said in normal situations, the life span for such a patient is between one to two weeks. But (Wong) is doing much better than other patients,” she was further quoted as saying.
Wong, who is also a lawyer and the former Sarawak DAP chairman, is now in his third term of office as Bukit Assek assemblyman, having won the state seat in 1996, 2006 and 2011.
The next Sarawak state election is due in 2016.
Wong also won the Sibu parliamentary seat in a by-election in May 16, 2010 after the incumbent MP Datuk Robert Lau Hoi Chew died due to cancer.
Wong followed his doctors’ advice and did not defend his seat in the 13th general election last May, with party colleague Oscar Ling Chai Yew now the Sibu MP.
