'Women like property' wins sexism award

The BN government has often lamented that it does not get the credit its deserves but one of its ministers is finally getting recognition, but for the wrong reasons.

Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Yaakob (left) emerged winner in the Foot in Mouth category in the Aiyoh... What Lah?! 2014 awards for comparing women to property when defending the assessment hike for properties in Kuala Lumpur last year.

The award, which was decided based on voting, was announced in a Petaling Jaya stand-up comedy last night by Miss Ribena Berry, the stage name for playwright Jo Kukathas.

To Tengku Adnan’s credit, he did attempt to make amends by apologising but later went on to explain he did not mean women were property but that if a house were to look nice, it needed make-up like how women groom themselves.

“I think next time don’t apologise-lah. He has his foot very down in his mouth,” said Miss Ribena, to laughter from the floor.

Tengku Adnan, who received an overwhelming 71 percent of 1,079 votes for the award, was not available to accept the unflattering award which was one among seven categories.

The award is aimed at highlighting sexist, misogynistic, homophobic or transphobic statements by public figures or entities but more importantly is aimed at holding them accountable for such remarks in a tongue-in-cheek way.

‘Project Runway for MP’

PAS’ Rantau Panjang MP Siti Zailah emerged victorious with 74 percent of the votes in the ‘Least Helpful to the Sisterhood’ category, which ‘celebrates’ women who are not really helping women, for her remarks that women should dress modestly to avoid rape.

“Here is another MP who believe her term in Parliament is to talk about fashion, we have so many fashion consultants in Parliament to talk about clothes.

“Siti Zailah thinks she is in Project Runway,” said Miss Ribena.

The ‘Insulting Intelligence’ category went to Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) women’s wing which defended the flogging of women for sex outside of wedlock or incest.

The group had said female offenders were only flogged while in a sitting position while male offenders had to stand, which showed Islam places great respect on females.

The third category, ‘Policy Fail’, went to the government’s backing of anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual (LGBT) musical ‘Asmara Songsang’ (Deviant Love) which followed the lives of three LGBT individuals.

“Those who continued their choice (of being LGBT in the play) were killed by lightning - this is why god invented lightning, to kill lesbians.

‘Electrifying play’

“Unfortunately, all those connected toAsrama Songsang will not come to collect the award tonight because there are so many lesbians here, they may get struck by lightning,” said Miss Ribena.

It won the category with 49 percent of the votes.

The ‘Cannot Ignore’ category, which recognises statements that are damaging to gender equality, was won by deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Nazmeen Zulkifli, garnering 53 percent of votes.

He had indicated the government was prepared to withdraw its statutory rape case against a 40-year-old man who raped a 13-year-old if he resolved it at the Syariah court.

The ‘Enough Already Category’ that acknowledges persistent sexist, anti-LGBT or misogynistic behaviour went to leaders who consistently described LGBT as a disease, including Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and Umno’s Tanjung Karang MP Noh Omar with 34 percent of the votes.

The sole positive award, the ‘Right on Track’ category recognising statements or action that helps gender equality, went to a Ipoh High Court decision by judicial commissioner Lee Swee Seng who declared unilateral child conversion unconstitutional.

The award, which began in 2012, is an initiative by the Joint Action Group for Gender Equality (JAG) comprising of 10 NGOs which advocate for women’s rights and equality.
