Alvin Tan sums up the recent goings-on in Malaysia, saying he is happy to have left a “sinking ship” and that he is embarrassed to be Malaysian.
PETALING JAYA: Having scooted off to the United States after being wanted on sedition charges in Malaysia, sex-blogger Alvin Tan took to Facebook today recounting the recent goings-on here and counting his lucky stars at having escaped a “sinking ship”.
Calling the country “a joke”, even its people, Tan remarked how things had gotten steadily worse after he took off.
“Najib vs. Mahathir, the incarceration of Anwar, POTA/new Sedition Act, push for Hudud, breakup of Pakatan Rakyat, shittiest Ringgit in recent history, threats of secession from three states, and both the public and the government focusing on ridiculous issues like mountain-top nudists, the camel toe of our national gymnast, and restaurant condiments with labels vaguely promoting religion.
“I’m so glad that I’ve left that sinking ship. The entire country is a joke. I’m sorry to say that even the people are a joke. I’m absolutely ashamed to be Malaysian.”
Facebook user Thomas Chan chimed in, saying Tan forgot to mention the deteriorating standard of education, the increasing crime rate, inflation due to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and the absence of even clean water to drink.
Chan added, “What choices do we have? Vote for another govt? The opposition is breaking up and change of govt would make matters worse.
“For most of us here, you either accept and live with the grim reality or ship out. Many of us here are waiting for the opportunity to ship out as soon as (possible).”
When asked by another Facebook user Kent Chong why his postings on Malaysia were so brief, Tan replied, “I’m less and less interested in Malaysia these days, like I said. It just doesn’t interest me anymore.
“From time to time, I’ll throw a token bone out there for my audience, but I’ve long lacked the passion to criticise and expose the government of a country I no longer have a stake in.”
Jason Ang meanwhile mocked Tan saying, “Alvin, you are behaving like a girl who had just broke up with boyfriend, but still constantly care and stalk your ex, comment a lot on how bad his new girlfriend is…while saying “hey i dont care about him at all”. L.O.L,” to which Tan replied, “I comment like once a month on Malaysia, and two skimpy paragraphs at that. There are non-Malaysians who talk about Malaysia more often than me.”
