PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim today warned that Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng might not be the last person who is against BN to be prosecuted.
The DAP secretary-general was charged with two counts of corruption last week, in what Pakatan Harapan leaders say is a systematic campaign against the federal opposition.
"This is without doubt a scurrilous and politically-motivated prosecution meant to sow disarray in the opposition by targeting our leaders.
"Based on current trends of investigations and prosecutions, I am certain that these attacks will not end with Lim but will likely widen to other leaders, perhaps to involve even former leaders of Umno-BN who have been awakened to the need for reforms and change to save Malaysia," he said in a statement.
"If Prime Minister Najib thinks that emasculating and manipulating the key agencies in this way will silence the opposition, he is mistaken. Leaders like Guan Eng and others will not be cowed; they will continue to champion the cause of democracy, justice and good governance."
Among those recently ousted from Umno are ex-deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin and former Kedah menteri besar Mukhriz Mahathir.
Suspended Umno vice-president Mohd Shafie Apdal, who was sacked from cabinet last year, today announced he will quit the party.
Anwar also expressed his solidarity with Lim's family.
"My thoughts also go out to Betty and their children and families who will endure these new travails as my own family has had to endure," he said.
Anwar is serving a five-year jail sentence after he was convicted of sodomy, in a trial denounced by human rights defenders.
Lim is charged with abuse of power and conflict of interest in the re-zoning of land in Penang and the purchase of a RM2.8 million bungalow on Jalan Pinhorn, Penang.
He pleaded not guilty and was released on bail of RM1 million with one surety.
The bungalow seller Phang Li Koon claimed trial to abetting Lim and was released on bail of RM200,000 with one surety. - Mkini
