In a bizarre take on current events, Umno acting president Mohamad Hasan last night questioned why Najib Abdul Razak has not been charged or arrested if the 1MDB scandal was a real problem.
Mohamad said this barely 12 hours after Najib's trial on SRC International - a former 1MDB subsidiary - commenced at the High Court in Kuala Lumpur.
Speaking at a Rantau by-election ceramah in Felda Sendayan, he veered into 1MDB while lamenting the Pakatan Harapan government's alleged lack of direction in leading the country.
"They have no direction. In Parliament, it's always about 1MDB.
"If 1MDB is truly a problem, you charge Najib. You used to say the charge sheets had been prepared, there has just been no arrest. So why has there been no arrest?
"It is not that I want Najib to be arrested, but these are all lies, all slander, pure lies," Mohamad told the 400-strong crowd.
Najib has been slapped with 42 charges of money laundering, criminal breach of trust and abuse of power.
Of these charges, 25 are related to 1MDB, six are on 1MDB's settlement with Abu Dhabi's International Petroleum Investment Co and one over the alleged tampering of the Audit Department's report on 1MDB.
Najib has also been arrested several times by the MACC, even kept overnight once, prior to his charges related to the 1MDB case.
Yesterday, Najib's trial on seven SRC International charges began in the High Court.
Mohamad was cognisant of this trial when he spoke about Najib again at the tail end of his hour-long speech.
"Najib will come to Rantau, especially Sendayan... He is accused of wrongdoing. We as the people, should not forget his contributions... The problems in court he is facing are his deal," he said.
Najib will be in Rantau tomorrow night. - Mkini
