KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia continues to stay in the double digits with 16 new Covid-19 cases reported as of noon, pushing the total number of cases to 8,831.

In a statement, health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said eight cases were imported, and another eight were local transmissions.

Four of the imported cases were Malaysians and another four involved permanent residents and those who were allowed to enter Malaysia for work.

He said the two imported cases were from India and China, and one each from Saudi Arabia, China, Indonesia, and South Korea.

"The local transmission cases involve one foreigner and seven Malaysians.

"The foreigner was tested positive during pre-screening before departure and was sent to the Sungai Buloh Hospital."

He added the new infections involving locals were in Sarawak.

"Three cases are from the Stutong cluster and one from the Sentosa cluster.

"Another one from a patient-under-investigation (PUI) from Melbourne, one from a screening of close contact to Case 8,695, while another one from screening before returning to work."

Four patients have been discharged today, bringing Malaysia's recovery total to 8,566 (96.9 per cent of the total number of cases).

Dr Noor Hisham said five patients were receiving treatment at the intensive care unit with one placed on ventilator support.

With no new deaths, the toll remains at 123 (1.39 per cent of the total number of cases). - NST
