SANDAKAN: The Election Commission (EC) has sent out voter cards to 32,962 registered constituents, comprising 1,810 early voters and 31,152 ordinary voters, who will cast their ballots in the Batu Sapi parliamentary by-election next month.

EC secretary Datuk Ikmalrudin Ishak said the move is aimed at encouraging voters to go out and cast their ballots.

He explained that the voter card contains information on voting, including on polling centres, voting channels, voter registration numbers, voting dates and times, as well as the recommended turnout time, which would make it easier for voters to go out and cast their ballots, either on Dec 1 for early voters or Dec 5 for ordinary voters.

"The EC hopes voters will go out to vote according to the recommended turnout time. This is to avoid voters gathering in excessive numbers at any one time and to enable physical distancing to be practiced when at the polling centres due to the Covid-19 pandemic," he said in a statement, adding that the EC began distributing voter cards on Thursday.

Voters are reminded to bring along their identity cards and voter cards, or voting information record, on polling day to facilitate checks.

Those yet to receive their voter card can obtain more information via the EC's portal at www.spr.gov.my, the MySPR Semak application, the short messaging service (SMS) 15888, or the EC hotline 03-8892 7018. - Bernama
