GEORGE TOWN: Flash floods hit a short stretch of the recently-opened Bukit Kukus bypass road today after scupper drains became clogged with dried leaves and rubbish following heavy rain.
The Relau-bound stretch of the road was under about a foot of water at 6.15pm today. A video clip posted by a passing motorist showed a car stuck in the water after it waded through the flood, while a motorcycle was seen making a detour in the wrong direction.

Council workers were seen clearing and removing the debris from the affected section and a Penang Island City Council spokesman said water was able to flow out of the drains after the clean-up.
Last month, piles of litter were spotted along the bypass road just two weeks after it opened, prompting the council to plead to road users to stop littering.

The council spokesman said cleaners cleared the drains regularly and inspected them after the last heavy rainfall. - FMT
