Pasir Gudang MP: Muhyiddin's legacy will end up in 'dustbin of history'

Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim has criticised former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin for his role in ousting the former Pakatan Harapan government.

The PKR MP recalled the promise made by then prime minister Mahathir Mohamad to hand over the top job to PKR leader Anwar Ibrahim - which was broken by the former. This led to Bersatu’s exit from the Harapan coalition which was carried out by Pagoh MP Muhyiddin Yassin.

Hassan (above) said Bersatu, in being part of Harapan, was in agreement with Mahathir's promise. Therefore, when Muhyiddin withdrew his party from the coalition, he was also complicit in Mahathir breaking the promise.

Muhyiddin later expelled Mahathir from the party the latter founded, which made way for his rise to the top as the country’s eighth prime minister.

“What is the retribution for Muhyiddin who broke said promise?

“Muhyiddin did not last long as prime minister. Just over a year - that is, the duration of the movement control order (MCO) when the rakyat were confined, Parliament was suspended and an emergency was declared throughout the country.

“Then, it was Muhyiddin's turn to be overthrown,” said Hassan, before highlighting Umno’s role in overthrowing the Muhyiddin government.

“Muhyiddin was forced to resign as prime minister and the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government, under Muhyiddin’s leadership, collapsed to the ground like playing cards.

“That is Mahathir and Muhyiddin’s lesson,” he said.

Quoting Leon Trotsky, Hassan remarked that the duo’s unethical political moves and broken promises have caused the political legacies of Mahathir and Muhyiddin to be discarded into the “dustbin of history”.

Trotsky was a Ukrainian-Russian Marxist revolutionary who played a key role in the 1917 communist revolution that overthrew the Russian Empire.

Hassan’s statement follows bickering between PAS, Umno and Bersatu in the run-up to the Johor state election.

Frictions between PAS and Umno have been increasingly apparent since the Malacca election last November, which saw both parties on different corners. Eventually, Umno triumphed and PAS was vanquished.

Following this, there have been renewed efforts by PAS to strike an electoral pact for the upcoming Johor polls but Umno has been lukewarm to the idea.

Ties between PAS and Umno warmed when Najib Abdul Razak was the Umno president and mid-way through his 2013-2018 term as prime minister.

After 2018, PAS stumped for Umno in several by-elections, most of which saw Umno winning.

Cooperation between the two parties reached its peak in September 2019 with the signing of the Muafakat Nasional charter - a document that was supposed to lead the way towards a formal electoral pact.

However, tensions rose after PAS formally joined the PN coalition led by Umno splinter party Bersatu.

The Umno annual delegates assembly in 2021 had resolved that the party cannot forge an electoral pact with Bersatu. - Mkini
