PETALING JAYA: Spouses of civil servants who have died will be allowed to work from home (WFH) for two weeks after their compassionate leave to help “ease” the pain from their loss and increase productivity at the same time.
Public Service Department (JPA) director-general Mohd Shafiq Abdullah said this was also in line with the call by Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob in conjunction with Women’s Day on March 8.
In his message, Ismail had urged wives of civil servants who have died to be given time to resolve matters regarding the family and the husband’s bequests.
In extending this to all spouses instead, Shafiq said heads of department should allow government employees to work from home after their compassionate leave to mourn the loss of the husband or wife.
He said this would be for a maximum of two weeks, including weekends and public holidays, and at the discretion of the department heads.
“This is aimed at paying attention to the welfare of civil servants and, at the same time, to increase quality and productivity in their delivery of services to the people.
“It is also in line with the call by the prime minister in his Women’s Day message urging for the empowerment of women,” he said in a circular sighted by FMT.
Shafiq said those allowed this facility would be required to adhere to all conditions listed in the government’s WFH directive.
In his message on March 8, Ismail urged heads of departments and top management of all organisations to allow women whose husbands have died to work from home for a suitable period.
He said this would be one of six initiatives to empower women which would be adopted by the government.
“The encouragement to allow a widow to work from home is because we understand the grief and burden they bear and they need time to manage family matters and affairs after the death of a spouse,” he had said. - FMT
