Muhyiddin should be grateful to Umno, says Nazri

Padang Rengas MP Nazri Aziz says Umno gave Muhyiddin Yassin the chance to hold important positions.

PETALING JAYA: Padang Rengas MP Nazri Aziz has hit back at Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin for stating that Perikatan Nasional (PN), which Muhyiddin chairs, should consider Barisan Nasional (BN) its enemy in the next general election.

Nazri said Muhyiddin, who is a former BN deputy chairman and Umno deputy president, should remember his roots.

“Muhyiddin should be thankful to Umno because the largest Malay party gave him a chance to hold important positions in the country,” Astro Awani quoted Nazri as saying in a report.

“He became the Johor menteri besar (from 1986 to 1995) because he was with Umno, and he was also the deputy prime minister after that.

“True, he was thrown out of Umno, but he should not be so revengeful that he forgets Umno’s good deeds towards his family and him.”

Nazri said it did not matter if Muhyiddin wanted to hold a grudge against Umno.

“Umno doesn’t care if Bersatu wants to fight or not, because we will make sure they lose,” he said.

Muhyiddin was appointed the deputy prime minister when Najib Razak took over the top post in 2009. He was also given the education portfolio and became Umno’s deputy president.

His alliance with Najib ended when he was removed as the deputy prime minister in a Cabinet reshuffle for being critical of the 1MDB scandal in 2015, and he was sacked from Umno for “indiscipline” the next year.

Muhyiddin then joined hands with former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to form Bersatu, becoming the new party’s president. Mahathir was its chairman.

Nazri also said it was no surprise that Muhyiddin would consider BN its biggest foe in GE15 “as Bersatu is unable to compete with Umno”.

“Because Bersatu did not get Malay support, they ‘stole’ a few Umno MPs to strengthen their party,” he said.

“Bersatu had only 13 MPs after GE14, two more than Amanah. That’s why they stole those Umno MPs who had no principles.

“What did they do after stealing those Umno MPs? They betrayed their friends in Pakatan Harapan and invited Umno, PAS, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) and others to form the government.” - FMT
