PETALING JAYA: There may not be enough ferries to get holidaymakers to Langkawi when the second term school holidays start this week, says a tourism official.
Langkawi Tourism Association (LTA) president Zainuddin Kadir said the government has instructed ferry operators to have at least five trips per day starting tomorrow.
However, he told Kosmo that based on the Cuti Cuti Langkawi website that conducts the online sale of ferry tickets, the number of trips has not increased.
“In fact, only three ferries have been scheduled from Kuala Perlis to Langkawi on Sunday despite the school holiday having started then,” he said.
The second term school holidays for states in Group A, namely Johor, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu, will run from Sept 2 to 10.
The school holidays for states in Group B, namely Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Perlis, Penang, Sabah, Sarawak, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan, will be from Sept 3 to 11.
Zainuddin said if no action is taken to remedy this, the tourism sector would face losses as visitors would not be able to get to Langkawi.
He also claimed that the statistics of the number of tourists entering Langkawi as published by the Langkawi Development Authority (Lada) “do not reflect the reality on the ground” as the low number of ferry trips mean that the service is only being used by local commuters.
Tour operator Ahmad Pishol Ishak also called on ferry operators to increase the number of trips and improve the quality of their services.
He also advised the public to purchase their tickets early to ensure they would get seats on the ferries. - FMT
