Two independent MPs from Sarawak have confirmed that they are seeking a platform to contest again in the 15th general election (GE15).
The two are Sri Aman MP Masir Kujat and Lubok Antu MP Jugah Muyang.
“(My) intention is still to look for a platform to re-contest. In this coming GE15 in Sri Aman, come what may.
“Hopefully my grassroots supporters are still intact,” Masir (above, left) was quoted as saying by The Borneo Post today.
The three-term Sri Aman MP said for now he will remain as an independent lawmaker in Parliament aligned with Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and the federal government.
Masir added that he has so far not considered applying to Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM).
Masir has been in the Sri Aman seat since 2008, which he won under the Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) banner before quitting the party in 2019 to join Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB).
He later left PSB on March 30 this year and threw his support behind Ismail Sabri’s government.
Waiting on PRS
Meanwhile, Jugah, who confirmed he intends to contest in GE15, said he still hopes to rejoin PRS before the polls.
“I am still waiting for the decision by the PRS supreme council (when they meet) on Sept 4,” he said.
Jugah also insisted that he has the blessing of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chairperson and Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Openg to rejoin PRS.
He is confident the party will accept him again, citing his strong grassroots support in Lubok Antu.
“Memorandums have been submitted to the PRS deputy president and secretary-general. And 80 percent of the longhouse or village chiefs in Lubok Antu area have signed (supporting) statutory declarations (SDs),” he said, claiming that 32 longhouses or village chiefs have sent in SDs in the past few weeks.
Jugah quit PRS before GE14 and subsequently won the Lubok Antu seat as an independent before joining PKR.
Following the Sheraton Move in February 2020, Jugah quit PKR to become an independent MP again. - Mkini
