PETALING JAYA: Umno veteran Yusof Ismail has expressed shock over his six-year suspension from the party, which he felt was due to his criticism of the party president in a WhatsApp chat group.

Yusof, who was Alor Setar Umno division chief up to this morning, was verbally notified of his removal by Kedah Umno chief Jamil Khir Baharom, with no reasons disclosed.

“I’m not sure what I did wrong to be handed such a long suspension.

“There has been no official notification from the Umno headquarters.

“I was also removed from a WhatsApp group for Umno division chiefs,” he told FMT.

Yusof did not discount the possibility that his critical views of Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had caused his ouster but felt the action was too extreme as he had only made comments in the party’s chat group for divisional chiefs and not publicly.

“I believe this is also a signal to the prime minister.

“If he does not dissolve Parliament, as decided by the Supreme Council, a similar fate awaits him.”

Last night, the party also sacked Zaharin Mohd Yasin, who is the former Bandar Tun Razak Umno secretary, from the party.

Party secretary-general Ahmad Maslan said Zaharin’s membership was terminated with immediate effect for violating the party’s ethics.

In a response via a video clip later, Zaharin, who is a blogger, said he was happy that he had been expelled. “I am now free to take on corrupt Umno leaders.” - FMT
