People are watching, Salahuddin says over possible Parliament dissolution this year

With Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob scheduled to propose a date for Parliament’s dissolution to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong soon following a decision by Umno, Amanah deputy president Salahuddin Ayub reminded the former that the people are watching.

“His Majesty, the Agong will be receiving advice from heartless Umno leaders to dissolve the Parliament while the country is facing flood disaster threats.

“The rakyat is watching His Majesty,” Salahuddin (above) said on Twitter today.

Yesterday. the Umno supreme council decided the Parliament should be dissolved soon to pave way for the 15th general election to be held this year.

Party secretary-general Ahmad Maslan said Ismail Sabri would be proposing the date for Parliament’s dissolution to the Agong, in line with Article 40(1) of the Federal Constitution.

In a separate tweet from last night, Salahuddin also implied there might be an attempt to call for a state of emergency after the dissolution of Parliament.

“Emergency is not the normal practice in our democratic system. Do not dissolve and then request for a state of emergency just for the sake of power.

“The lives of the rakyat are more important than Umno’s drama,” the former minister said.

Earlier today, Ismail Sabri sidestepped queries on when the Parliament would be dissolved and acknowledged that his party had been calling for the election to be held for some time.

“It’s nothing new. Let us return it (mandate) to the rakyat to make a decision. Let the people decide,” he said. - Mkini
