PETALING JAYA: About a dozen men have been arrested in Kuala Lumpur and Johor on suspicion of being involved in betting on the football World Cup matches in Qatar.
Four men were arrested at a house in Taman Bukit Maluri, Kepong, on Saturday, and four others in Setia Alam, near Johor Bahru, one man in Batu Pahat and two others in Muar, police said.
Sentul district police chief Beh Eng Lai said mobile phones, modems, tablets and laptop computers were seized in the raid in Kepong.
The four suspects, aged between 40 and 48, were held for investigations into operating a common gaming house and for book-making.
In the Setia Alam raid, district police chief Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said all suspects aged between 22 and 57 were believed to be agents of gambling bookies and had betting credit limits of RM75,000.
“Also seized were RM5,975 in cash and four mobile phones believed to be used for taking gambling stakes on the World Cup,” he said.
In Batu Pahat, a 31-year-old man was picked up on Friday suspected of taking bets on the World Cup. Police confiscated RM185 and a mobile phone which showed he had a betting credit limit of RM8,000.
In Muar, two men aged 34 and 42 were arrested on suspicion of taking World Cup bets. Three mobile phones were seized together with RM585 in cash, police said. -FMT
