PETALING JAYA: MCA has pledged its “wholehearted” support for Anwar Ibrahim’s unity government, described by secretary-general Chong Sin Woon as a step towards national reconciliation between the ruling and opposition coalitions.

He said the unity government served the greater good and “MCA therefore urges all citizens to join in this endeavour together, in order to stabilise the political situation and advance the economy”.

He said MCA would undertake to act as a check and balance on the unity government to ensure it upholds the core tenets such as moderation and multiculturalism.

The statement was MCA’s first official word about its position on the Anwar government.

Last week, following the inconclusive general election, MCA had called for the resignation of Barisan Nasional chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for sending a letter to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong stating BN’s support for Anwar to become prime minister.

Chong said the letter was “completely out of line” with the BN Supreme Council’s decision not to support anyone for the top post. There was also a proposal for BN deputy chairman Mohamad Hasan to replace Zahid as BN chairman.

Chong said that MCA had gathered constructive feedback about its electoral performance at a party briefing today, as well as updates on the political situation on the ground.

He said the party’s priority will be to review its electoral performance while looking at strategies to rebuild MCA.

“Presently, our party will focus on the two parliamentary seats and seven state seats that we have secured. We remain determined to improve on our shortcomings from within and to recoup voter support.” -FMT
