Govt won't reinstate Muar swimming pool project

PARLIAMENT | Putrajaya does not intend to revive a public swimming pool project in Muar, Johor, that was axed by the previous administration.

Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh told the Dewan Rakyat that the project had to be cancelled due to a lack of funds and high maintenance costs.

In a written reply to Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (Muda - Muar), Yeoh (above) said the ministry was open to considering applications for a swimming pool in the future.

Syed Saddiq had asked the Youth and Sports Ministry to explain why the public swimming pool component of Muar's "Hub Anak Muda" project was axed "at the last minute".

He also asked the government to state if the project would be reinstated.

Last Tuesday, Syed Saddiq told the Dewan Rakyat that the public pool project received government approval in 2019 and 2020 - when he was the youth and sports minister - but was cancelled by the subsequent administration.

He argued that the pool was the most important component of "Hub Anak Muda" because there were no public swimming pools serving the Muar, Ledang, Bakri and Pagoh vicinity.

At the time, Yeoh told the Dewan Rakyat that Putrajaya had approached the Johor state government before but the latter did not want to pick up the maintenance bill for the pool. -Mkini
