PKR MP: Suaram's criticism of Anwar unfair

Suaram was not fair in its criticism of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, said Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin.

This comes after its executive director Sevan Doraisamy said that Anwar will be the worst prime minister in the country if he fails to fulfil the reform promises Pakatan Harapan made over the years.

"Sevan’s comment is unfair and (it) does not give due recognition to the many reforms implemented by the coalition government so far," the MP said in a statement today.

Sim (above) added that the coalition government's move to abolish the mandatory death penalty has been lauded by many international organisations such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, human rights advocates and Amnesty International as a big step forward for human rights in Malaysia.

“The prime minister himself implemented Prime Minister Question Time (PMQT) in Parliament.

“This is a reform to enhance the role of Parliament as a greater check and balance to the executives.

“Ironically, it was the opposition leaders who failed to attend all PMQT. Has Suaram criticised the opposition leaders yet?" he asked.

Sim also said Parliament had set up 10 special select committees to oversee all ministries to ensure greater accountability and better governance.

Previously, Sevan questioned the government’s political will to abolish tyrannical laws, especially those involving detention without trial.

Sevan said Suaram has high hopes for Anwar, who himself was a victim of police brutality and detention without trial, to do something now that he has the power.

“So, as a former victim, (and known as) Bapa Reformasi, the expectation (is high).

“Anwar is a better choice compared to the previous PM because of his reform agenda and background.

“But with that baggage, if he fails to deliver, Anwar will be the worst prime minister. It’s because the previous prime minister did not promise much in terms of reform and all that,” Sevan said. - Mkini
