Beng Hock's family to visit PMO next week

The Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement will visit the Prime Minister's Office in Putrajaya on Dec 13.

According to its chairperson Ng Yap Hwa, this was after their attempts to get an appointment to meet Anwar Ibrahim since the latter took office a year ago came to nought.

"In the past year, the association and Teoh's family have written to the prime minister and Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

"We engaged cabinet ministers, deputy ministers, MPs, and political secretaries about our demand to set up a new investigation team, but the unity government did not give a concrete response," Ng said in a statement today.

Last July, DAP national publicity secretary Teo Nie Ching said efforts were still being made to ensure that a meeting between the association and Anwar happens and to get justice.

However, five months after the pledge, the meeting was yet to materialise, Ng lamented.

"Since the prime minister has no political will to meet Teoh’s family, the association and the family will visit the PMO in Putrajaya at 3pm on Dec 13.

"We urge members of the public who care about justice for Teoh to join us in this visit. We hope the door of the Prime Minister's Office is opened for Teoh’s family," Ng said.

Teoh’s demise

Teoh was found dead on July 16, 2009, on the fifth-floor service corridor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam after being questioned overnight on the 14th floor of the Selangor MACC headquarters.

At the time of his death, Teoh was a political aide to Selangor state executive councillor and incumbent DAP Seri Kembangan assemblyperson Ean Yong Hian Wah.

In 2011, a Royal Commission of Inquiry determined that Teoh was driven to commit suicide following aggressive questioning by the MACC.

In 2014, the Court of Appeal unanimously ruled that Teoh's death was caused by the act of “a person or persons unknown”, including the MACC officers who questioned him overnight before he was found dead. - Mkini
