Bukit Aman is set to procure 13 sniper rifles for RM2.3 million, which Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said will be used to equip its Federal Reserve Unit (FRU).
The rifles will be among the new assets being acquired for the anti-riot formation's arsenal, under an allocation that the Home Ministry recently approved.
In his speech at the FRU 68th anniversary celebration in Kuala Lumpur this morning, Razarudin expressed the force's appreciation to the ministry for the funding.
"The approved allocation includes procurement of anti-riot safety gears comprising 1,000 units of protective body armour and 1,000 units of gas mask with total costs of RM10 million; and RM2.3 million for procurement of 13 units of .22 sniper rifles," he said.
Besides the protective gear and rifles, other assets to be purchased for the unit include 10 battle vans for RM3.6 million; four float bonded trucks for FRU's Cavalry Unit (RM2.2 million); 10 anti-riot dogs (RM900,000); and replacement for 175 riot guns (RM2.8 million).
"It is hoped that these new assets will be fully utilised by FRU personnel to continue providing the best service," Razarudin added.
During the event, the top police officer also launched FRU's new camp facilities in Kuala Lumpur.
