Wong pledges to meet Dong Jiao Zong to improve Chinese education

Newly appointed Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh has pledged to promptly meet with Dong Jiao Zong to discuss matters related to Chinese education.

He is also committed to advancing the development of the education system across three major sectors.

"We know that Chinese education is very important to everyone, so we will arrange a meeting as soon as possible to improve Chinese education," he said.

The Taiping MP was speaking to reporters after officially clocking in at the Education Ministry. He was accompanied by Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek.

He said that once he has settled down, he will arrange a meeting with Dong Jiao Zong in a short while.

He said he would focus on three major areas, namely infrastructure, teacher-related issues, and communication with parents and the public to promote the education system.

Wong said the Education Ministry has consistently paid close attention to school infrastructure, including the maintenance of buildings and addressing dilapidated schools.

"In the past year, I believe the government has put in great efforts to advance infrastructure development, while also ensuring that all projects can be completed as soon as possible."

On the controversial issue of the shortage of Chinese and Tamil language teachers, Wong stressed that the ministry is giving it close attention.

"The ministry pays close attention to the issues of human resources, teachers, and teaching staff in schools of all streams."

Wong also pointed out that, according to the new curriculum education framework for 2027, the ministry will listen to public opinions to adjust its direction.

"We want to do what the people want."

"Many friends are asking how we can enhance the quality of education. We will hold meetings with various stakeholders, gather diverse opinions, and seek input."

Smooth operation

Wong also expressed gratitude to former deputy education minister Lim Hui Ying for sharing her experiences and providing advice.

In the cabinet reshuffle, Lim is now deputy finance minister.

"She has provided me with advice, insights, and guidance, and I will strive to do my best."

Wong pledged to leverage his experience as an MP to excel in his current role.

"I hope that with my experience as an MP since 2008 and my experience in the Public Accounts Committee since 2018, I believe all of this will contribute to ensuring the smooth operation of my duties."

"For me, every position is a trust and mandate given by the people, and we must make every effort to do our best."

Wong had previously served as the chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) from August 2020 to October 2022. - Mkini
