Immigration to target employers harbouring undocumented migrants

 

Nearly 100 undocumented migrants were nabbed for not possessing valid travel or identification documents and overstaying in a joint raid led by the immigration department on New Year’s Day.

KUALA LUMPUR: The immigration department will focus on employers and those harbouring undocumented migrants when carrying out raids this year, its deputy director of operations, Jafri Embok Taha, said.

Jafri said the focus on those harbouring undocumented migrants was aimed at curbing their influx.

“But we will continue to arrest, charge and deport undocumented migrants under immigration laws,” he told reporters after a joint operation in Little India, Brickfields, with the civil defence department and national registration department today.

Nearly 100 undocumented migrants were detained for not possessing valid travel or identification documents and overstaying.

They were arrested after authorities screened 370 foreigners from India, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Pakistan and Nepal, among others.

Enforcement officers raided 30 premises, including homes, restaurants, clothing stores and barber shops, along Jalan Thamby Abdullah.

Jafri said the raid was conducted following complaints from the public. - FMT
