Disabled man in royal escort 'assault' case to hold presser with LFL

The disabled e-hailing driver, who was allegedly assaulted by a royal escort, is scheduled to attend a press conference with Lawyers for Liberty (LFL) this evening.

The 5pm press conference will be held at the LFL office in Section 8, Petaling Jaya.

According to the media invitation, representatives of deaf advocacy groups would also be present together with LFL director Zaid Malek and lawyer Latheefa Koya.

Speaking to Malaysiakini, Zaid (above) said: “This press conference is about getting justice for the victim who is a disabled person. That’s all we can say for now.”

Previously, it was reported that the 46-year-old alleged victim had filed a police report on the incident which occurred at a five-star hotel in Kuala Lumpur.

It was alleged that the assault took place when an escort of Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim had instructed him to move his vehicle. The man was said to be waiting for passengers at the time.

When quizzed on the claim which went viral on social media, Federal Criminal Investigation Department chief Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the victim filed a police report on Wednesday and the case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which relates to voluntarily causing hurt.

Several hours later, Kuala Lumpur police chief Rusdi Mohd Isa revealed that the alleged victim had lodged a second report on the same night stating that the matter had been resolved amicably and he did not wish to prolong the case.

Probe must go on

However, several quarters, including LFL, had called for the investigation to proceed.

In a statement yesterday, Zaid said the government must ensure that there is no interference in this matter.

“The integrity of our laws and its enforcers are at stake and any misstep will surely lead to a complete mistrust in the administration of justice in our country,” he added.

Zaid also concurred with PKR MP Hassan Karim that there is no settlement in a criminal case.

The Kuala Lumpur police chief told Malaysiakini this afternoon that the case has not been closed.

In a related development, Tunku Ismail has responded to the alleged incident and revealed that it involved a police security team.

Calling for a thorough probe and justice to be accorded to the victim, his highness stressed that he does not condone illegal actions or acts of intimidation. - Mkini
