Defamation: Preacher, activist ordered to pay each other RM100k

The civil court ordered activist Arun Dorasamy to pay RM100,000 in defamation damages to Islamic preacher Muhammad Zamri Vinoth.

However, the Kuala Lumpur High Court also ordered Zamri (above, left) to pay a total of RM200,000 defamation compensation to Arun and activist-lawyer Siti Kasim.

Judge John Lee Kien How @ Mohammad Johan Lee this afternoon made the ruling linked to multiple Facebook posts uploaded between April 26, 2019, and June 10, 2020.

Zamri’s lawsuit was over an allegation that he raped a victim whom he later married.

Arun (above, right) and Siti’s counterclaim was over a claim that the duo were enemies of Islam.

The verdict means the RM200,000 compensation is to be split equally between Arun and Siti.

Johan also ordered Zamri, 40, and Arun, 54, to make an apology to each other through their respective Facebook accounts and in local newspapers.

The judge noted that none of the parties who made the impugned statements were able to prove their truthfulness during the trial.

When met by the media after open-court proceedings, Zamri said he would discuss with his lawyer Norazali Nordin whether to appeal to the Court of Appeal.
