KUALA LUMPUR: Umno is set to launch its own school of politics early next year, which will be open to all Malaysians, said party secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.
Asyraf said this school will seek to equip Malaysians with basic knowledge on nationhood, the Federal Constitution, and the dynamics of democracy, among others.
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi first announced plans for the school of politics in March 2022, particularly targeting the younger generation.
Last month, he also said Barisan Nasional would set up a political school in Janda Baik to train young Malaysians with the potential of becoming future leaders and election candidates.
Asyraf said tonight’s Umno Supreme Council meeting discussed the unity government’s second anniversary, adding that it was clear Malaysians across the ethnic and religious spectrum have given it their backing.
He said the top leadership agreed that every effort will be made to further strengthen Umno’s relationship with other parties in the unity government.
“The Supreme Council also asks all Umno representatives in the unity government, whether in the Cabinet, government-linked companies or government agencies, to further improve their performance for the sake of the rakyat and the country,” he said in a statement.
Asyraf also announced that Umno Veterans Club chairman Othman Desa has been appointed as a member of the party’s Supreme Council.
In congratulating Othman, he said this was to recognise and show Umno’s appreciation for the veterans club’s role in defending and strengthening the party all this while. - FMT
