Former EC chairman Hashim Abdullah dies at 71

 Former Election Commission chairman Hashim Abdullah died today at the age of 71.

His daughter, Aleena Fatin, said Hashim suffered a heart attack on Tuesday and was taken to Putrajaya Hospital.

“That evening, he was admitted to the high-dependency unit. At 10am today, the doctor instructed us to refer him to the National Heart Institute (IJN), but he suffered another heart attack on the way,” Bernama reported her as saying.

Aleena said Hashim was given CPR upon arrival at IJN and was pronounced dead at 2pm.

The EC expressed its condolences to Hashim’s family in a post on X.

Hashim served as EC chairman from 2016 to 2018 and was also a former secretary-general of the agriculture and agro-based industry ministry, as well as a board member of Universiti Malaysia Kelantan.

Funeral prayers will be held at Surau Al-Mizan, Presint 8, Putrajaya. Hashim will be laid to rest at the Taman Selatan Muslim cemetery in Presint 20. - FMT
