  • National track cycling ace Azizulhasni Awang has been given the green light to continue his bid for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, days after publicly seeking clarity over whether Malaysia still required his services.

According to Berita Harian, the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) said the National Sports Council (NSC) had confirmed Azizulhasni as among the national riders tasked with collecting Olympic qualification points in the keirin and sprint events.

Youth and Sports Minister Dr Taufiq Johari has also directed the NSC to ensure continuity in the track cycling qualification programme.

The decision follows Azizulhasni’s nine-page statement on Aug 28 in which he said: “The situation now is not really about whether I want to continue racing towards LA28 or not. The question is whether Malaysia still needs my services for LA28.”

MNCF president Amarjit Singh Gill said the decision gave Azizulhasni much-needed clarity ahead of the qualification campaign, which begins with the UCI Track World Championships in Shanghai in October. - Mkini
